Alexander Stucki describes in this book the rapid development of self-loading pistols in the years between 1892 and 1900. Extensive archival research shows the individual steps of the testing and procurement process. The historical selection criteria still allow an evaluation today. Particularly remarkable are the colour illustrations throughout, showing the pistols submitted in each case from the former collection of the Eidgenössische Waffenfabrik and comparable pieces. Among them are also extraordinary prototypes such as the oldest surviving Parabellum pistol ever.
Stucki's work enables the reader to look over the shoulders of the designers and the officers responsible for the procurement in equal measure. One can hardly get any closer to the pistol development of these years.
