The Eskimos ("Inuit") settle in the Arctic regions from North America via Greenland to the Bering Sea and the coasts of North Asia. They are hunters and fishermen. The hunters move out from permanent settlements of stone houses, which are usually also trading posts. During the short polar summer, tents usually serve as accommodation, otherwise the well-known igloo made of snow blocks. The well-known dog sled serves as a means of transport for travel and hunting, and on the Arctic Ocean the kayak or the women's boat ("Umich"). Our series shows Eskimos catching seals at the ice hole and hunting walrus from a kayak, various hunters using harpoon, spear, bow and arrow (e.g. hunting polar bears) and fishing at the ice hole, Eskimos building igloos, returning from hunting, dragging prey, as guides of dog sleds. Women and children, dogs and accessories (igloos, drying racks for fish and meat) complete the series.
Eskimo is the collective name for the indigenous peoples of the northern polar region, whose settlement area stretches from northeast Siberia across the Bering Strait and the Arctic regions of Alaska and Canada to Greenland. The two main groups are the Inuit (Eastern Eskimos) in northern Canada and Greenland and the Yupik (Western Eskimos) on the Russian Chukchi Peninsula and in Alaska.
