Unternehmen "Barbarossa" was the cover designation for the German campaign against the Soviet Union. Divided into three army groups, German units stormed east towards Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. In December 1941, the German advance came to a standstill in the ice and snow outside Moscow. After further successful offensives that took the German Wehrmacht as far as the Caucasus in 1942, the fate of the Eastern campaign took its course with the defeat at Stalingrad in 1943.
Paul Carell was the first author to devote popular books to the fateful events. Paul Carell captured and described the events both from the soldiers' point of view and from the perspective of grand strategy. The result is a work that is at once informative, poignant and documentary.
