The Boeing C-17 "Globemaster III" is the West's most modern heavy military transport. It has short take-off and landing capabilities and can operate from unpaved runways. The in-flight thrust reverser allows steep landing approaches to minimise the risk of enemy fire. It can also drop loads and soldiers in flight from any altitude. All this makes it enormously versatile. Since entering service with the U.S. Air Force in 1993, the aircraft has proven itself in nearly every conflict involving the U.S. - most recently in August 2021, when a single aircraft evacuated 823 people from Kabul.
