On 8 December 1941 (Japanese time), prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces launched the Malaya Campaign with the aim of capturing the strategic stronghold of Singapore. This article examines the early operations in the south, focusing on the Imperial Japanese Navy's Southern Expeditionary Fleet, which supported the army's landings from the sea. In addition, the authors present scale replicas of the British Royal Navy's Force Z, which suffered a historic blow in the Battle of Malayathe first time in history that capital ships were sunk solely by air attacks.
