Since Japan is surrounded by sea on all sides, both enemy invasions and domestic offensives had to cross water. This necessity prompted the Imperial Japanese Army to develop and deploy a wide variety of ships. In this article, the authors use models to present lesser-known examples of Japanese Army ships, including special ships with flight decks and landing craft, requisitioned merchant ships, and even uniquely designed Army submarines that were extremely rare worldwide.
