Air Model Special 46: Aircraft Carrier Akagi and Type 97 Carrier Attack Plane/The Lineage of Boeing C-135/C-137

This year's Aircraft Models Special has two major features! The opening special feature concentrates on the newly released Border Models 1/35 scale 'IJN Aircraft Carrier Akagi Bridge w/ Flight Deck + Type 97 Attack Aircraft'! Both aircraft and ship modellers will be interested in this new kit, its appeal and how to capture it. The second special feature takes up the 'Boeing C-135 / C-137 series', which is still in service 70 years after its prototype's first flight. This series is often confused, but strictly speaking, they are different aircraft and were based on different aircraft. The KC-135 is based on the Boeing 367-80, the first prototype jet transport aircraft in the USA, and was adopted as an aerial refuelling aircraft. The Boeing 707 jet airliner was based on the Boeing 367-80, with an extended fuselage, etc., and the C-137 was modified from this and converted to a military transport aircraft. Both had sufficient flight performance and payload for a pure cargo transport aircraft, but lacked a cargo door and ramp for roll-on/roll-off during loading and unloading. Although their lifespan as transport aircraft was short, many derivatives were produced, including aerial refuelling aircraft, electronic warfare aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft, aerial command aircraft, aircraft reserved for the President of the United States, VIP transport aircraft, and early warning and control aircraft.
