This is both a military biography of Colonel General Alexander Löhr, the commander of the German Air Fleet 4 in World War II, and a history of his troops. The account begins with the formation of Luftflotte 4 and its development until 1939 and describes in the following three chapters Löhr's military career from the beginning of the war until his replacement in 1942 as well as the operations of Luftflotte 4 under his aegis: the Polish campaign in 1939, the Balkan campaign in 1941 and the war against Russia in 1941/42.
