Description
Alexander Löhr as army commander in the Balkans - still in autumn 1943 Löhr succeeded in conquering the Dodecanese - in the deportation of the Jewish population from the Greek islands he had to face weighty reproaches. He either did not take care of it, the easiest accusation, or actively supported it by making transport space available. The retreat of his army group across the Balkans in 1944/45 remains his undisputed military masterpiece. In 1945, Löhr remained with his soldiers during the surrender, although he could have withdrawn and although he was aware of the fate that lay ahead of him. Perhaps the deliberate defamation was also intended to conceal the fact that only a few officers had the stature to do so. Also, when he took command as WB "Southeast", the situation in the Balkans had long since become muddled. After all, he demonstrably made an effort to conduct the war in a humane manner.
