The 6th Military History Conference of the Air Force in March 2018, despite its double-pole theme of "Operation and Tradition" chosen well in advance, was entirely dominated by the question of tradition due to its topicality developing in 2017. The (scientific) engagement with both topics is the basis for an active debate in the sense of historical education as well as the development of a critically-reflective and contemporary understanding of tradition for the "citizen in uniform".
For the air force members, knowledge of air operations in the past naturally plays an important role. After all, they are part of the German air force's "own" history and - compressed and centred in individual representatives - formed the basis for the selection of namesakes over long decades and partly up to the present day, who were also used as role models for the formation of sub-force-specific ideas of tradition. This volume, which has been expanded beyond the lectures, is intended as a contribution to the debate on the question of what the traditions of the Air Force should be today and in the future. Volume 10 of the series "Schriften zur Geschichte der Deutschen Luftwaffe".
