Whoever enters the treasury of the Cathedral Museum in Fritzlar, his gaze is caught by a gem cross, which according to local tradition is called the Heinrichskreuz. The variety of colours of the 346 precious stones and the cross relics in the crossing of the cross particularly catch the eye of the observer. Visitors are amazed when they see the filigree engravings on the back of the cross. The Fritzlar Heinrichskreuz is one of the most beautiful gemma crosses to be found in the German-speaking world.
On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary, this volume is published to present for the first time a summarising study of this cross. At the same time, the local colour of the 11th and 12th centuries is scrutinised. The editor of the volume, Rev. Dr Jürgen Kämpf, who served as chaplain in Fritzlar from 2011 to 2018, summarised previous findings about the Heinrichskreuz and attempts an interpretation of the cross. Clemens Lohmann, who worked as the town archivist in Fritzlar for many decades, examines the local colour and thus provides an insight into life in Fritzlar at that time.
