Balduinseck, with its towering tower house, has always been regarded by researchers as a prime example of a late medieval castle. The complex was built in the course of the far-reaching territorial policy of its builder and namesake, Archbishop Balduin of Luxembourg of Trier, one of the outstanding personalities of the European Middle Ages. Situated somewhat off the beaten track in the Hunsrück, the ruins have recently come increasingly into the focus of an interested public.
Increasingly serious damage to the historical substance made extensive overall restoration necessary between 2008 and 2014. Numerous high-quality findings came to light, which now make it possible to understand the architectural history of Balduinseck more precisely and, in some places, in a completely new way. This publication reflects the interdisciplinary approach of the project: representatives of various disciplines such as monument conservators and restorers, building researchers and historians as well as nature conservationists shed light on a multi-faceted picture of the castle in their contributions.
