The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (abbreviation RCMP, colloquial abbreviation Mounties; French Gendarmerie royale du Canada, GRC, colloquial abbreviation police montée) is the national police force of Canada, which also performs local duties on behalf of the provinces (except Ontario and Québec) and territories as well as many municipalities. Here is a patrol around 1880.
The precursor of the RCMP was the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), founded on 23 May 1873 to bring law and order to the then Northwest Territories (which included today's provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and parts of Manitoba as well as the territories of Yukon and Nunavut). The red colour of the uniform was intended to be reminiscent of Great Britain on the one hand and to stand out from the blue US military uniforms on the other. The organisation of the NWMP was modelled on British cavalry troops (hence mounted - "mounted").
