The Fairchild C-123 Provider was one of the last piston-engine cargo aircraft delivered to the United States Armed Forces. Its late entry into serviceduring an era of rapid development in turboprop and jet aircraftinitially seemed to promise it only a brief operational life. Nevertheless, during the Vietnam War, the C-123 secured an unforgettable place in USAF history: it performed indispensable duties in tactical logistics and paratrooper transport, flew covert missions, and played a notorious role in the aerial spraying operations conducted under "Operation Ranch Hand."
