Heinrich Pflanz, a local historian from Landsberg, has compiled a documentation on the last phase of the Second World War and the post-war period in the district of Landsberg a. L. over decades of work. The result is a unique insight into the lives of the people shortly before and after the end of the war in 1945, which was marked by the collapse of the Third Reich, the last battles of individual units of the German Wehrmacht, low-level air raids on civilians, marauding soldiers of the Allies during the invasion and the chaos of the post-war period, in which the arbitrariness of the French and American occupiers and gangs of foreign workers painfully determined the lives of the people. Heinrich Pflanz has succeeded in presenting this period in a lively and vivid way through documents, photos, descriptions of life's fates and many authentic eyewitness accounts, thus making it comprehensible. The events in the district of Landsberg a. L. are also exemplary for the fate of people in other regions of Germany, where the hoped-for peace did not return with the surrender on 8 May 1945, but instead hardship, violence, suffering and lack of freedom continued.
