The 10000 ton cruisers were the most emblematic ships for the renewal of the French navy after World War 1. As the naval programme did not foresee any new battleships, the seven 10000-ton cruisers, which met the standards of the Washington Treaty of 6 February 1922, were to dominate the image of modernity in the battle line, at least in the 1930s. Within the French Navy they flew the flag in the Atlantic as well as in the Mediterranean and partly in the Indian Ocean, but with the exception of three of them their careers ended by sinking in the port of Toulon without having proved themselves in a real battle.
This volume focuses on the two cruisers "Suffren" and "Colbert".
