At the end of the 1970s, the German Armed Forces relied on a new type of simulation technology to train enough drivers for its huge tank fleet. Since virtual worlds were still a distant future at that time, the focus was on terrain models, television images and hydraulically moved driver's cabs. Using the example of a Bundeswehr driving school, the author sheds light on the technology and use of these early driving simulators a journey back in time to the height of the Cold War.
