The Life Guard Cossacks formed the elite among the Cossack regiments. Unlike other Cossack formations, they received regular pay, had a tight organisation and should be regarded as a type of regular Lancers (Uhlans) rather than an irregular unit. They distinguished themselves in the battles of Austerlitz and Friedland, and saved the life of the Tsar at Wachau in 1813. Countless significant advance and rearguard engagements were also among their military merits. They also had the honour of leading the Allied armies in their invasion of Paris in 1814. This work presents the history, organisation and deployment of the Cossacks of the Russian Tsar's bodyguard in the Napoleonic Wars and also looks in detail at their uniform and equipment. More than 140 illustrations, including 50 contemporary ones, 5 maps, 38 colour uniform schemes and 33 bw drawings make up the visual material.
