In the Hellfeld house at Neutor, Goethe's original friend Karl Ludwig von Knebel experienced decisive moments in Thuringian and world history from 1804 to 1810: the consequences of the university crisis, the Battle of Jena, the Erfurt Congress of Princes, etc. The major events were reflected in his writing diaries and letters, as were everyday moments. Knebel's writing diaries, which have never been published or evaluated outside of Goethe research, supplemented by an extensive compilation of Knebel's correspondence, provide insights into the social and economic conditions of the university town of Jena in the first decade after 1800. The otherwise faceless majority of Jena's urban society takes shape in Knebel's writing calendars, thus filling the 1810 Jena address book with life. At the same time, this edition offers a broader picture for studies on Knebel's more famous contemporaries, such as Goethe, Hegel, Jean Paul and Wieland and ultimately also on the many women of Goethe's time with whom Knebel conducted an extensive literary and political correspondence.
