The M24 Chaffee tank was delivered to US Army units from 1944 to provide a light tank on the battlefield that could replace the obsolete M3/M5 Stuart. The configuration of the M24 differed significantly from its predecessor and its design proved to be extremely successful, making it one of the best light tanks ever built. Mobile, robust and reliable, it was well armed for a light tank and featured a 75 mm calibre, 48-round M6 gun. The tank's armament was supplemented by two Browning 12.7 mm calibre machine guns. The M24 was also successfully used for direct support of the infantry and for advanced reconnaissance tasks. During the conflict, effective co-operation was also developed between the M24 units and heavier armed tanks such as the Sherman in its various versions.
