The Dornier Do 217 twin-engine high-wing bomber was used extensively by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Versatile and adaptable, it could carry out bombing raids, attacks on sea targets and night fighter missions in its various variants. The Dornier Do 217K version was characterised by a reinforced fuselage, revised wings and more powerful engines. It was specially modified to carry and deploy the Ruhrstahl SD 1400 "Fritz X" remote-controlled glide bomb - a pioneering development at the time - on an underwing carrier. In this configuration, the Do 217K was mainly used in the Mediterranean region. On 9 September 1943, the Italian battleship "Roma" was hit and sunk by a Fritz X off the coast of Sardinia.
