Within ten years, between 1939 and 1949, the USSR developed from an isolated nation into a superpower on a par with the United States. For its leaders, the Second World War was marked by sacrifice and heroism. For the people, however, this period was marked by great catastrophes: the Shoah, the famine of 1946-1947, and civil war in Ukraine and the Baltic states. This Great Patriotic War, which Stalin and his successors sought to glorify, claimed more than 26 million victims.
