The NVA was a novelty in German military history, just as the state of which it was the strongest organ of power was not a successor state to previous German states. As a product of the Cold War, it came into being, based on the KVP, only in the mid-1950s, when a process of revolutionising the military began. In its early years, its military capability was low, reaching its peak in the early 1980s. Impressed both by their public image and by the high level of their combat readiness and training, NVA members were sometimes referred to by observers as the "Red Prussians".
