347 Traditional names with the name of the unit and date of award. This study examines the development and focus of the cultivation of tradition in the NVA on the basis of tradition names awarded to units, ships and facilities. Based on the current state of research, ten categories are presented, with the help of which a systematic classification of the 347 NVA tradition names identified is carried out.

The results confirm the valid research finding that the NVA's tradition cultivation concentrated predominantly on actors of the communist resistance against the Nazi regime. Above all, names of imprisoned or killed "anti-fascists" were frequently awarded. Around 72 per cent of the traditional names examined commemorated members of communist parties who were active in the resistance. Non-communist opponents of the Nazi regime, on the other hand, were hardly ever honoured.
