At the centre of this beautiful scene (based on the well-known painting by Menzel) stands Frederick the Great, playing his beloved flute. Contemporaries report that the great king and brave soldier suffered from stage fright before these concerts in the immediate circle. He only seemed more relaxed after his old teacher Quantz had given him an appreciative nod. In addition to members of the court orchestra, the series shows confidants from the king's entourage.
