The French artist Édouard Detaille is one of the best and most influential military painters in the world. Many well-known contemporary military painters, such as Don Troiani or Keith Rocco, regard him as their role model. His depictions of the battles and soldiers of the Napoleonic Wars and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 are of the highest drama, realism and uniform accuracy. This volume presents the life and work of Édouard Detaille. More than 100 mostly colour reproductions of his paintings show how one of the great masters of battle and soldier painting painted.
