Volume 124 of the Naval Fighters series. In 1940, the US Navy placed an order with Boeing for the XPBB-1, a large twin-engine flying boat with a wingspan of 139.8 feet, whose performance was far superior to that of the four-engine PB2Y Coronado and the twin-engine PBM Mariner. The aircraft was named Sea Ranger and later, when the project was cancelled, renamed Lone Ranger. It was built with almost the same wings as the B-29. The aircraft had excellent flight characteristics and a range of 4,720 miles. But the need for the new B-29 led to the programme being cancelled. Production of the B-29 was taken over by the newly built factory that had been intended for the construction of the XPBB-1.
