During the Second World War, the Wehrmacht recruited foreigners from various regions, including the USSR, the Balkans, North Africa and the Middle East. Among them were many Muslim volunteers. This book examines their recruitment, their motives, their actions and the consequences of their service to Germany. The book examines the rise of Arab nationalism in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as nationalist aspirations in the Balkans and the former USSR. It highlights Arab volunteers from North Africa and the Middle East who served in the German army from 1941 to 1945. It provides a detailed account of several unique units, including the Bosnian Muslim 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar, whose recruitment, combat history, and disbandment are recorded. The Caucasian Waffenverband of the SS (19441945), which was composed of Muslim Caucasian volunteers, is also examined.
