At the beginning of the Second World War, German troops invaded Denmark and Norway and occupied the two countries, but left neutral Sweden alone. Less than a year later, citizens from all three Scandinavian countries volunteered for the Waffen SS and fought on the newly created Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. By the end of the war in 1945, the number of Scandinavians who had fought in the Waffen SS had reached several thousand. The number of casualties was high, but there were survivors, and they returned home, often facing hostility and reprisals. This book is about the wartime experiences of these Scandinavian Waffen SS volunteers, which they describe in their own words - a final testament to a generation that is disappearing. Many volunteered for the Waffen SS, driven by a deep hatred of communism. Some, of course, believed in Hitler's vision of a new world order, while others were merely young men yearning for adventure. Jonathan Trigg has interviewed some of the last survivors, who tell their story with absolute veracity.
