A volume from the series "Kleine bayerische Biografien". Elector Maximilian I (1573-1651) is considered the most important Bavarian ruler of modern times. He restructured the ailing state finances, reorganised the administration and made Bavaria a model of an early absolutist state. Passionate Catholic religiosity, a high sense of duty and iron discipline towards himself and others determined his character.
For all his austerity and thrift, Maximilian was also a great builder and patron of the arts. In the Thirty Years' War, as head of the Catholic League and the Emperor's most important ally, he led Bavaria to a position of European power, which admittedly demanded heavy sacrifices from the country. Maximilian emerged from the conflict as one of the few winners among the German imperial princes, winning the Electorate and the Upper Palatinate from the Bavarian Wittelsbachers.
