For a long time, the assessment of the life achievements of King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1786-1868) has been based on the high esteem in which he was held for his cultural kingship, which left impressive architectural testimonies throughout Bavaria. But the actual politics are often overshadowed by the grandiose historical politics of this king. This volume of small Bavarian biographies by Karl Borromäus Murr therefore aims to measure the political ideals formulated in the king's various monuments against Ludwig I's real political achievements. The result surprisingly reveals a kingship full of contradictions.
