The Short SC.7 Skyvan was developed in the early 1960s and had to overcome considerable challenges including two engine changes before it was accepted by operators. But it mastered these challenges and laid the foundation for a family of aircraft that remained in production until 1992. The Skyvan was used for both cargo and passenger transport and has recently become very popular with parachutists. Its strikingly angular shape has earned it many nicknames, from Shoebox to Flying Shed. This book explores the origins of the design and its evolution through several versions, including some design studies that were never implemented. It provides a comprehensive overview of the Skyvan's civil and military operators, an insight into the flying experience and an assessment of its safety record. It also includes a photographic overview of the key design features that may be of interest to model builders. With many previously unpublished photos and drawings, this is the most comprehensive history of the Skyvan ever published and the first volume in a series on aviation workhorses.
