George Washington is one of the key characters of the history of the United States of America, not only due to his role as supreme commander of the Continental forces during the Revolutionary War, but also because of his immense political importance before and, especially, after the conflict, when he became the first president of the young American democracy.
For this bust, we wanted to do a portrait based on the famous painting of Washington, known as The Athenaeum, done by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. Even if the painting was a bit complicated for the artist, as it was a challenge to capture the look of the mouth of the president, altered by the denture he had started to wear recently, Martha Washington, the Presidents wife immediately loved the painting and it served as the model of dozens of copies that were widely distributed.
Our intention was to do an easygoing bust that would serve as an exercise for painting portraits of particular characters.
