The old Austria had already outlived its historical usefulness when the French Revolution of 1789 made completely new social frameworks possible. However, the multi-ethnic state of Europe was still strong enough to stand up to the new forces by means of the best army equipment and a corresponding willingness to learn. After a stalemate in the 1790s and two crushing defeats in 1805 and 1809, the forces around Metternich were able to put the brakes on progress.
Without Austria, victory in the Battle of the Nations and Napoleon I's abdication in 1814 would not have been possible. Moreover, its part in the final defeat of the Emperor of the French in 1815 has often been undervalued.
