This book brings together for the first time a selection of the most interesting helmets from Norman collections relating to the Allied landings in 1944. These private collections, which are not open to the public, contain items that were partly saved from destruction and mostly found on the numerous battlefields in the region. The collectors have allowed their finest helmets from all sides of the war to be photographed and placed in their historical context. You can discover a timeline illustrated with documents from the period, bringing the great moments of the Battle of Normandy back to life. The condition of the helmets on display varies greatly, as some were dug out of the ground, others come from attics, and the names engraved on them tell their personal stories. Others bear clear evidence of the fierce fighting during those two months, with damage caused by bombing and shrapnel.
