Using documents from the First World War and dozens of unpublished eyewitness accounts collected in the early 1970s, Patrick Facon traces the history of the battles for the mountains of Champagne, whose ridge line overlooks and blocks the Chalons plain. These battles have been forgotten and are far less well known than those of Verdun, the Somme or the Chemin des Dames, but their names (Cornillet, Mont Blond, Mont Haut, Casque, Téton, Perthois and Mont Sans-Nom) echo no less grimly in the history of the First World War.
