The first submachine guns were developed during the First World War. After 1918, the weapon was of only moderate interest to the military, who did not understand its usefulness, except in "cleaning" the trenches. However, in several conflicts, such as the Chaco War or the Spanish Civil War, the weapon's capabilities could be tested. The significance of the submachine gun changed with the beginning of World War 2, when the Germans massively deployed submachine guns. As the conflict progressed, differentiated armament became established. New, simple models were developed that could be easily produced in large quantities and at low cost. From 1945 to the end of the 20th century, submachine guns were modernised, but sometimes disappeared from soldiers' equipment in favour of assault rifles. New models with advanced technology were developed, mainly used by law enforcement or special forces. In the last 100 years, about 700 models of submachine guns have been developed.
