At the beginning of the 16th century, Basque craftsmen began to manufacture firearms. But it was not until the end of the 19th century that the Basque-Spanish gun industry took off with the development of large companies like that of the Orbea family. The industrial revolution, the creation of new professions around the manufacture of handguns and the introduction of automatic pistols quickly helped the Basque gunsmiths in the Eibar region to achieve international importance. In the 1920s, talented industrialists in the French Basque Country founded new factories whose production was to shape the history of handguns. The authors, historians and specialists in handguns, allow us to retrace this human and industrial adventure in which companies excelled that profoundly shaped the history of the global arms industry. This remarkable research work makes it possible to revive an entire part of the industrial history of the Basque Country, which until now has been little or insufficiently known.
