This book traces the military career of the German submarine commander Kapitänleutnant Werner Hemke. Henke served as an officer aboard U-124 at the beginning of the war until he took command of U-515, a Type IXC submarine, in February 1942. He undertook a total of six enemy cruises, during which he accumulated an impressive amount of sunk tonnage. On its last enemy voyage, U-512 was sunk by an American task force in April 1944.
Werner Henke and 40 of his crew managed to escape and became American prisoners of war. During an escape attempt from the American prisoner-of-war camp Fort Hunt, Werner Henke was shot dead.
