Description
This is the story of Corvette Captain Adalbert Schnee. Born in Berlin on 31 December 1913, he joined the Reichsmarine as a naval officer candidate on 8 April 1934 after graduating from high school. After his first basic infantry training in Stralsund and practical training on board the "Gorch Fock", he took part in the 5th training voyage of the light cruiser "Emden" in 1935 under the frigate captain and later grand admiral Karl Dönitz, with whom he was to have a lifelong friendship. The gripping biography of one of the most successful German submarine commanders.
After further training periods and courses in Flensburg-Mürwik, Wilhelmshaven, Kiel and Stralsund and a total of seven months of on-board training on the light cruiser "Leipzig", Adalbert Schnee was promoted to lieutenant at sea on 1st April 1937 and decided at the end of his three-year training period to switch to the still young U-boat Force. Initially assigned as 1st watch officer on U 23, Adalbert Schnee also experienced the beginning of the Second World War and his first five enemy voyages on this submarine, before he was given his own first command on 30 January 1940 with U 6, which was followed on 19 July 1940 by command of U 60, a 750 t submarine. With the latter, he succeeded in sinking two merchant ships on a total of three enemy trips in the North Atlantic.
After a short interruption, which he spent as deputy commander on U 121, a Type IIB training submarine, he was able to commission U 201, the first submarine of the new Type VIIC, on 25 January 1941. Promoted to captain lieutenant on 1 March 1942, Adalbert Schnee was able to increase his sinking successes with U 201 to over 95,000 gross tons on a total of seven enemy cruises in the Atlantic by 24 August 1942. As the 105th bearer, he was awarded the Oak Leaf of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 15 July 1942, which he had already received on 30 August 1941. After relinquishing command of U 201, one and a half years were to pass before Adalbert Schnee was to set sail again with a submarine, for on 26 October 1942 he became an Admiral Staff Officer with the Commander of the Submarines and later an advisor in the High Command of the Navy. Promoted to corvette captain on 1 August 1944, Schnee left Bergen for the last time shortly before the end of the war as commander of U 2511 - a boat of the completely new type XXI. The sources are not unanimous about the course of this enemy voyage - Adalbert Schnee claims to have come within torpedo range of the British heavy cruiser "Norfolk", which more recent research doubts due to the ordered route of the heavy cruiser "Norfolk". What is certain, however, is that no torpedo was fired due to the armistice order of 4 May 1945. U 2511 was then destroyed during Operation Deadlight in 1946. After the end of the war, Korvettenkapitän Adalbert Schnee and his crew were briefly taken prisoners of war in Norway, but by the autumn of 1945 he had already been reassigned to the German Minesweeping Service. In his civilian life a salesman and father of three children, he remained closely connected with the sea and the navy until his death on 4 November 1982 as president of the Association of German Submariners.
