Dr Adrien-Jacques Renoult served in the Rhine Army from 1792, then in Italy under Bonaparte and in Egypt under General Desaix. After Bonaparte's death at Marengo, he ran the hospital of the Consular Guard before being appointed senior physician to the elite gendarmerie of the Imperial Guard, with which he fought in Prussia in 1806, Poland in 1807, Spain in 1808 and Austria in 1809. The variety of events he describes and, above all, the impartiality with which he judges the people he knew and the events he witnessed make these pages a collection of interesting notes. His position not only allowed him to participate in major military events as a soldier, but his open and loyal character also won him the affection of the great men to whom fate had led him, combining the good fortune of being their brother in arms with that of becoming one of their closest confidants. It is primarily in this capacity that he has left us these memoirs, in which his deep gratitude towards his famous friends, Generals Desaix and Savary, is evident at all times.
