In 1828, Gabriel Laffaille published his memoirs of the campaigns in Catalonia, which are republished here together with a biography compiled in 1930 by the historical service of the French Army General Staff. As an officer in the engineering corps and a graduate of the École polytechnique, he was considered one of the most respected general officers in the army in France and even abroad at the time. His work is of great value, written in a lively, open and apt tone. The account of his campaigns as a captain in 1808 and then as a battalion commander from 1809 onwards earned him the most flattering reviews from all eyewitnesses to the events described. Even today, it is still considered the definitive work on this part of the Spanish War.
