The Polish state re-established in 1919 did not meet the expectations of influential Polish politicians, military leaders and intellectuals. According to their conception, Poland should be much larger and also extend to areas where there was only a Polish minority. At first, they took advantage of the losers, annexing German provinces in the west and Lithuanian ones in the north. ... War was waged against the young Soviet Union, resulting in the acquisition of Galicia and parts of Belarus. Josef Pilsudski and his successor Josef Beck were keen to keep the German Reich on the ground. For this reason, Poland repeatedly offered to support military measures against Germany in the Western capitals. It was not until 1939 that this Polish dream seemed to come true.
