This book reads like a parcours ride through the history of World War 2. The author concentrates on 25 dramatic battles that stand out from the general events of the war: The capture of the Eben Emael fortress by paratroopers in 1940, the air battle for England in 1940, the 3-week campaign to defeat Greece in 1941, the battle in the Demjansk cauldron in 1942, the battle of the mountain troops for the Caucasus in 1942, the biggest convoy battle in the Atlantic in 1943, the air battle over the Ruhr in 1943, the battle and sinking of the battleship "Tirpitz" in 1944, the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, the defence of the fortress of Breslau and the rescue of millions of German refugees across the Baltic Sea in 1945, as well as 14 other battles and enterprises between 1939 and 1945.

In addition to the factual account of the military events, the author always keeps the focus on the people who fought bravely, were wounded or perished - whether by bullet on the battlefield, suffocated in the buried air-raid shelter or drowned in the icy waters of the Baltic Sea.
