In 1933, the author joined the SS Student Storm Battalion and caught the attention of Heinrich Himmler, who ordered him to train as an SS leader. After further training at the SS Junkerschule Braunschweig, he became a research assistant at Wewelsburg Castle, the ideological center of the SS. After completing his doctorate, the author became head of the library there in 1939 and was then drafted into the Waffen-SS. Quickly rising to the rank of battalion commander on the Eastern Front, Dr. Frank was ordered to Obersalzberg in 1943 as commander, where he was responsible for the security of the Berghof. As an SS Obersturmbannführer, he was ordered by Hitler to arrest Hermann Göring in April 1945. Dr. Frank was unable to prevent the bombing of the Obersalzberg. The account of his captivity as a prisoner of war until his release in 1948 concludes these memoirs.
