Its company commander and Knight's Cross recipient Heinz Macher reports on the third battle for Kharkov and the Kursk Offensive. Eastern Front 1943: With only 35 men, the young company commander of the Sixteenth, Heinz Macher, breaks through the Soviet defenses in front of Kharkov, thereby contributing significantly to the success of the famous Manstein castling maneuver, with which the Germans win the third battle of Kharkov. Macher is awarded the Knight's Cross for his services. A few months later, the company takes part in the Battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle of all time. Shortly afterwards, Macher is wounded. This book provides insights into the everyday life of a Waffen-SS combat unit during the two most important German operations of 1943.
