The report of an officer of the Waffen-SS on the campaign in the East begins in Greece in the early summer of 1941 and takes the reader via the northern runway, the Uman Cauldron, near Kherson across the Dnieper along the Black and Azov Seas deep into the Caucasus to the tank battle around the Grusinian Army Road. With Stalingrad, the great retreat begins, the individual stages of which are described: the struggle at the Gulf of Finland, for the bridgehead at Narva, the tank breakthrough at Kharkov, followed by the hopeless encirclement battles in Galicia and finally the battles in the Carpathians and in the Puszta as well as the last act of the war in the Vienna Woods.
