The term cartaune is a Germanisation of the Italian "quartana bombarda" ("quarter rifle"), whose iron ball weighed a quarter of a hundred-pound main rifle ball. Cartaunas were similar in external shape to a Scharfmetze, but had smaller calibres and a lighter weight. They were divided according to the length of the barrel into long cartaunes (called "Singer") and short cartaunes (called "Nightingale"). In England, the name cannon was common. -Wikipedia-
