The German war of 1866 sealed the reign of breech-loaders in small arms and also the retirement of smoothbore tubes from field artillery. La Hitte, president of the artillery school at Lafere, had the old bronze four-pounders from Gribeauval's time simply fitted with six flat-edged rifling and guided bottle-shaped hollow shells - grenades - by means of tangs made of zinc, which, sitting in two rows around the shell casing, fitted two into each rifling. This was the type of gun with which Napoleon III made his debut in Italy in 1859, thus using the rifled gun for the first time in field battle. Due to its superiority, the Prussian breech-loading gun completely defeated the La Hitte system, with which the French were equipped, in 1870/71. (Source: Diez)
