Agte, P. Michael Wittmann und die Tiger der Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler

In this work of war history, the author traces the history and operations of the Tiger Company of the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" and the later heavy tank division of the I SS Panzer Corps. Beginning with the formation in December 1942, through the winter operations near Kharkov in February 1943, the major offensive "Zitadelle" in July 1943 to the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and the retreat battles in the Ostmark in 1945, military historian Agte describes the path of the LAH's Tiger tanks. Michael Wittmann stands out for his special combat successes and is impressively and extensively honoured in this book. Wittmann was awarded both the Knight's Cross and the Oak Leaf to the Knight's Cross within a few days in January 1944. When Wittmann and his crew were killed on 8 August 1944 in the fighting around the Falaise Cauldron, he was Hauptsturmführer and the 71st Sword Bearer. The author also portrays the panzer men in Wittmann's entourage and thus presents a comprehensive chronicle of the company with the largest number of high bravery awards in the Leibstandarte and the entire Waffen-SS.
